Thai medicine is super old school. Founded as a self care treatment and developed through Buddhist practices over centuries of practice by local doctors and village healers. Physical therapy is one branch of Thai medicine and this is the foundation of this treatment. Your therapist - Jon - has been trained for over 500hrs by a teacher who is the most recent in a lineage of practitioners dating back several generations in northern Thailand and Burma. The session itself is traditionally carried out with the recipient remaining fully clothed in their own comfortable clothing (something light and which allows you to stretch). The work takes place on a large futon mattress. This immediate grounding is instantly calming. The added security of being on the floor eliminates any restrictions of a couch. The techniques are wide ranging, including deep broad tissue compression, stretching, acupressure points, energetic pathway work, joint mobilisation and traction along with many others. Techniques are often deep, they will be close to the limit of comfort, don't be discouraged, this limit is right on the money, it is where the bliss of "just enough but no more" exists. Part of Jon's skill is knowing how deep is deep enough, this is based on who you are, what you are experiencing and what you want to receive. It's unlikely you will find this type of treatment elsewhere in Azores, this is serious healing work, a gem of a find for massage therapy enthusiasts. People who particularly enjoy this type of work are Yoga fans, other massage therapists find this fascinating too. It is, however enjoyed by and meant for absolutely anyone not excluded by medical conditions which would exclude them from any manual therapy.
